Research Summary |
We organized and provided training workshops of the action-oriented Water Education for Teachers (WET) Program of the River Foundation, aimed at community members of various age groups, including child rearing parents. Participants were able to get certification as water educators if they so wished. The program included listening to stories about “Water Ko (association),” “Wasabi Field,” and “Water Channels to be used for Domestic Water,” as well as learning about the changes in water use from the past to present in the community and by industry, using old maps of the Tama River basin (Akishima) while visiting various places and meeting local people to gain insight into culture and value of underground water of the basin. We also studied the relation between the Tama River and underground water, learning from the local researchers and geography experts living in Akishima in order to deepen our understanding of differences in the sources of deep and shallow groundwaters. At the end of our program, we developed a WET activity arranged specifically for Akishima town and held a public workshop (aiming for youth participation in particular) as a venue to show our accomplishments. By having those who became educators in the first year participate as organizers in the second year, we were able to develop human resources that become leaders to ‘protect water’ and ‘effectively utilize water’ with an emphasis on communication for the next generation’s education, ensuring that the culture and value of underground water in the Tama River basin be passed on to the next generation. |
