Research Summary |
Young snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina), which are a specified non-native species, have been found in the Tamagawa Canal since 2003, and there is a strong possibility that they are breeding and becoming firmly established. Other non-native turtles that were originally kept as pets also inhabit the canal, and it is feared that they will have an impact on indigenous types of turtle, but no survey of turtles has been conducted in this area and the habitat situation is not clear. This study was conducted with the aim of understanding the habitat situation of turtles living in this area, with a view to contributing to the protection of indigenous turtles and the extirpation of non-native turtle varieties. In this study, the whole of the open channel section of the Tamagawa Canal (about 30km in total) was divided up into five zones, and the types of turtle in the canal were verified using snares baited with food, with some turtles being taken away for study and others being observed directly in situ. The proportion of non-native varieties was calculated and the size of the populations was estimated. |
