Research Summary

I. Role of floods during the last glacial period in the formation of Akiru Plateau

We carried out field surveys and examined soil boring data. Then we discovered that Tachikawa Loam Formation, which is a component of Akirubara Layer, is widely covered with flood deposits, and was tentatively named Akirubara Formation. We analyzed the sedimentation time and the distribution of Akirubara Formation, and examined the role of floods during the last glacial period in the formation of Akiru Plateau.

II. Inundations during the Tumulus period (from late 3rd Century to 7th Century) in the Ochigawa Region on the lowlands on the right side of the upper Tama River

We observed strata outcrops of the Holocene Terrace Group that was formed due to inundations, and elucidated the role of the inundations of the Tama and Asagawa rivers in the formation of the Holocene Terrace Group.

III. Inundations after the Last Jomon period (from BC 10th Century to BC 4th Century) in Chofu-somechi Region in the lowlands on the left side of the upper Tama River, and the formation of natural levees

Between the Yayoi period (from BC 4th Century to 3rd Century) and the Tumulus period, this area suffered from frequent inundations, which contributed to the formation of natural levees. As a consequence, the area became suitable for people’s settlement.

IV. History of flooding in the Modern period, characteristics of flooding, and environmental variations

We collected and analyzed documents regarding the history of flooding. Then, we clarified the characteristics of flooding of the Tama River , and discussed its relationship with environmental variations.
