本研究は1、府中の農業用水路の現状(矢島)2、府中市の都市化と農業用水路の機能変化と市民生活(木崎)3、多摩川低地の地形と府中用水(高橋)4、地形図および空中写真からみた府中用水の取水口の変化(桑原)の各項による調査研究から府中用水路の全貌を明らかにしできた。
その要旨を簡単にふれると府中用水は、全長6キロで(1660年頃)多摩川右岸国立市青柳を取水口とし、水田灌漑と村人の生活水を養う機能を実に340年の長き歴史を刻んできた。この間、多摩川自身の変化(水・砂利の資源化、汚濁化、連続堤防の完成)に大きな影響を受けてきた。
しかし、府中用水路に与えた決定的タメージは水田維持の村落社会から、高度経済の都市社会を維持する上下水道の機能を負担させたことにあった。その結果、今日の府中用水の水流と水路は、存亡の危機にさらされている。

We studied the Fuchu Yosui Canal from the following aspects: (1) the current state of an irrigation canal in Fuchu (by Yajima); (2) the effects on local residents of the urbanization in Fuchu City, and of functional changes in irrigation canals (by Kizaki); (3) the relationship between the topography of the Tama River Lowlands and Fuchu Yosui Canal (by Takahashi); (4) changes in the water intake of Fuchu Yosui Canal based on topographic maps and aerial photography (by Kuwabara).

Here is a brief summary of the results. Fuchu Yosui Canal is 6 Km in length (about 1660) and took in water from the right side of the Tama River at Aoyagi District of Kunitachi City. It has provided irrigation and domestic water for local residents for 340 years. During this period, the Canal has been affected by changes in the Tama River : the utilization of river water and gravels as resources, pollution, and the completion of continuous embankments.

However, the City experienced the transformation from rural community of paddy cultivation to a metropolitan community with a developed economy. The transformation caused the Canal to be used as both a water supply and sewage system to maintain the urban community, which increased the load on the Canal. As a result, it is feared that the Fuchu Canal may become unusable.
