Research Summary

In the middle reaches of the Tama River (including the middle Tama River and the reaches of its tributaries) lies the Kazusa Group, which was formed in the Pleistocene Epoch of the Quaternary Period. It is characterized by 7 sedimentary cycles, each of which is further classified into 1-4 unit(s). Fourteen mollusk fossil assemblages were found at survey sites. As a result of analysis of these fossils, it was determined that there were periods when water temperature was lower or higher in the survey sites than the present average annual sea surface temperature in the coastal area (in Choshi City of Chiba Prefecture) that is closest to the survey sites. This phenomenon appears to have had a close relationship with glacial eustacy (sea level change).

Based on the above, we prepared an educational activity including fieldwork, in order to understand the old environment in the middle reaches of the Tama River and its changes, as well as the relationship between such changes and glacial eustacy.
