2008年4月より,多摩川上流・中流の野外調査を行い,残りの試料採取を開始した.野外調査は通算35日間行い,丹波川,小菅川,奥多摩湖,日原川,大丹波川の54地点から河川堆積物と河川水を採取し,前年度と合わせて93地点の試料(174試料)を確保した.これらの河川堆積物,河川水試料についてICP-MSおよびXRFにより化学分析を行った.その結果,多摩川上流・中流域の河川堆積物の有害重金属元素(Cu,Zn,As,Cd,Pb)含有量は,CuとZnは局所的に土壌含有量基準値を超える試料が存在するものの,それ以外の元素の含有量は基準値を大きく下回ることが明らかとなった.また,河川水のZn,Asも水質基準値を下回り,多摩川上・中流において有害重金属元素による汚染はほとんどないと考えられる.しかし,河川堆積物の有害重金属元素のほとんどは上部大陸地殻平均値(UCC)より有意に高い濃度を持つという結果が得られた.

A field survey of the upstream and midstream areas of the Tama River was conducted starting in April 2008 for a total of 35 days to collect the samples remaining from a previous survey. Samples of river sediments and river water were collected from 54 sites at the Taba River, the Kosuge River, Okutama Lake,the Nippara River,and the Ootaba River. Adding the samples from the previous year, a total of 174 samples were obtained from 93 sites. ICP-MS and XRF were used to conduct chemical analyses of these samples. The results showed that among the toxic heavy-metal elements (Cu,Zn,As,Cd,Pb) the Cu and Zn in some samples exceeded the standard values for concentrations in soil, but the concentrations of other toxic heavy-metal elements were substantially less than their standard values. The Zn and As in the river water were also below the water quality standard values. It was concluded that there was almost no pollution by toxic heavy-metal elements in the upstream and midstream areas of the Tama River. The results showed, however, that the concentrations of most of the toxic heavy-metal elements in the river sediments were statistically significantly higher than the average values found at the upper continental crust (UCC)
