The actual status of nitrogen saturation that has been recently realized to occur even in Japan was investigated from approaches of stream water chemistry, forest soils and measurement of atmospheric deposition in various districts in our country including the Tama watershed. The atmospheric deposition study clarified 1) a regional and altitudinal distribution of N deposition covering alpine area at high elevation and a special feature in its chemical composition. The survey of 47 streams on its chemistry indicated 2) the symptom of acidification together with nitrogen saturation (high NO3- concentration) and 3) a zonal distribution where NO3- is removed within forested watershed through denitrification. The research on deep soil chemistry under forest floor demonstrated 4) vertical NO3 profiles which successfully explain the stream water NO3 levels, 5) the evidence showing that all of atmospheric deposition SO42- throughout the history of anthropogenic S emission may be retained by the anion exchange capacity of volcanic ash soils, and 6) a decline in the pH level accompanied with N saturation as low as 3 m in soil depth. These results provide new and valuable insight on the status and the mechanics of N saturation and concurrent ecosystem acidification which is under way in Japanese forests. |
