Research Summary |
Below the mountain zones lie secondary forests, such as Quercus serrata [Konara oak] and Quercus crispula [Japanese oak] forests. These secondary forests were once maintained by people. However, it is nowadays difficult to expect commercial value from these forests; also, plateaus and hilly areas have been actively reclaimed for development. As a result, these forests have been shrinking dramatically. In urban areas, however, there is a growing demand for forests: for example, as a place for recreation, and from the standpoint of environmental cleanup. Therefore, it is urgently important to preserve or expand these secondary forests. There are several secondary forests in/around the Tamagawa River basin ; this study focused on the Quercus serrata forests, which have shrunk rapidly along with urbanization. More specifically, we carried out field surveys and observations regarding the following points: seasonal variations in the emergence of Quercus serrata seedlings; the effects of the collection of fallen leaves and of the cutting of leaves, on the growth of Quercus serrata seedlings; and the development of new buds from a stump after a Quercus serrata tree has been cut down. Based on these data, we understood the structure of forest stands, the impact of management by people, and the regeneration process of forests after deforestation. Consequently, we discussed ways to preserve or even cultivate Quercus serrata forests, and if possible, other secondary forests. |
