Research Summary |
Until modern times, several names were given to each river in Japan The term, Tama, is actually a generic name for the Tamagawa River system, which consists of the following tributaries: the Rokugo River, the Tamagawa River itself (written with a Chinese character meaning a ball, a stone or jewel: for differentiation, the term “jewel” is added in parentheses after the river name when necessary), the Tamagawa River (written with Chinese characters and given to the main stream of the Tamagawa River system) and the Taba River. The Tama (jewel) River, especially, is a relic of the old days when people lived in a confined area and believed that river gravels were tama (jewel) that purify river water. Ancient people used tama (jewel) as the name of areas, as well as for the theme of a literary work. From these geographical and historical data, we can imagine the geographical environment in which ancient people lived together with the Tama (jewel) River. In this study, we investigated the Tama (jewel) River and other rivers named Tamagawa River throughout Japan . Through this research, we analyzed the correlation between the self-purification function of the Tama (jewel) Rivers and their location in their river systems. Then we discussed the universality of the contribution of the Tama (jewel) Rivers to the natural environment. The main purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between these rivers and the old geographical environment transmitted from ancient inhabitants. |
