Summary

This Society has held meetings at the midstream basin (Fussa in FY 2006), downstream basin (Kawasaki in FY 2008), and upstream basin (Okutama in FY 2010). This fourth meeting was held at the Hino Tokyo Metropolitan High School in Hino City of the midstream basin on January 13, 2013 (Sunday), with the theme “Studying a desirable river environment from the viewpoint of living creatures and their living environment.” There were up to 120 participants, including presenters and the executive committee members, which was the largest number of participants for the Society.

The focus of the conference was commemorative lectures given by two presenters in the morning and the general presentations by nine presenters in the afternoon. Their presentations covered research results from a wide variety of fields including insects, plants, wild birds, fish, and geology, and provided various ideas for discussion. (See the attached summary of presentations.)

In addition, pre-events were held, such as the local wild bird conservation groups holding an early morning bird watching event in the area between the nearest train station and the conference venue. There were also workshops on making and playing recorders made from bamboo from the Asakawa River during the breaks, and exhibits of specimens and panels of presentations and photos of living creatures throughout the day.
