Summary

“Josuiki” is 10-volumed remaining document issued in1791 and is important to understanding the role of the diversion network belonging to the Tamagawa Josui water channel. According to volume 3, there were 33 diversion channels, and at the top of each diversion channel there was “Bunsuiko”, a diversion port, which was also called as “Jusuiko” or “Sabuta” but each has a different role, for receiving water flowing from the Tamagawa Josui water channel.

At each diversion port, a device (made of wood, soil, and stones) for receiving water, the amount of which is specified by the administrator, is attached to the revetment of the Tamagawa Josui water channel. Many of their shapes still exist today.

The author wanted to clarify the state of these diversion ports at present and has been conducting research on the theme.

The method of the research was to collect and decode data such as the historical background, design, construction method, and management system of the diversion port, as well as conducting a field survey to verify these and keep a record.

These studies gave us concrete data that, for several hundred years, the diversion port made of wood, soil, and stones, etc., remains in the Musashino Plain while performing the water diversion function, and a part of it still exists today.
