Summary

In this study, we examined the watershed classification by using social, economic and environmental data for 30 local governments in the Tama River basin.

In addition to the questionnaire survey to the basin residents (the number of valid responses was 2703), the questionnaire survey was conducted to the basin local government and the interview survey was conducted to 4 local governments.

From the results of the questionnaire survey, there was a difference in the consciousness and attitude of residents regarding "hydrophilicity" and "environmental conservation", especially in the headwater-upstream areas and the middle-downstream areas.

In addition, from the view point of the residents' own relationship with the Tama River, the residents in the upper stream region are stronger than those in the middle-down streams, and there are statistical differences between these basin clusters in terms of “landscape” and “happiness”.

It can be considered that there are few opportunities to interact with the Tama River for residents in the middle downstream.

This result suggests the need for local governments' policies to "know better" and "disseminate information better" about the Tama River.
