Summary

To examine genetic variations of the Japanese daces in the Tama River,Japan,specimens from a‖ area of the river system were used to compare their pahial DNA nucleotide sequences of the mito-chondrial DNA d―loop region with those fronl the oher localities.

The specimens examined in this study consisted of the species/subspecies of Triolodon hakonensis(n=253)and T.brandtii maruta(n=193).

Among them,inconsistent species identincation between genetic and morphologicat traits,

breeding color and cephalic lateral― line systems,were found in 17 specimens,suggesting a possible

hybridization betteen the two species/subspecies.

T.hakonensis Solely appeared in the headwater and upper reach of the river systelm,whereas the two species/subspecies sympatrically distributed at the lower reach.

Among 36 haplotypes detected in T.hakonensis,16 types were shared in those at dirercnt stations in the Tama River and those from Uono River and Biwa Lake where the transplantation originated.

The specimens at upper reach,however,possessed unique haplotypes from those at lower reach and other localities,indicating that they were endemic population in the river.

In contrast,only four haplotypes were detected in T.brandtii maruta specimens,and were all considered to be transplantation origin.
