Identification of species and areas with a higher conservation priority in fragmented landscapes: a multi-taxonomic and scale study in Tama area

Habitat fragmentation involved in urbanization causes biodiversity decline and loss worldwide. In this project, we investigated the effects of habitat fragmentation on biodiversity at multi-scales (genetic, species, and community-levels) in Tama area, Tokyo, central Japan. Tama area is one of the most fragmented landscapes in Japan. The main purposes of this project are to predict species' sensitivity to habitat loss and fragmentation, and identify areas where such a sensitive species remains. Finally, we mapped areas of high conservation priority in Tama areas, and provided an implication for biodiversity conservation in highly fragmented landscapes.
We succeeded to predict species sensitive to habitat fragmentation. Our results are beneficial for the conservation and management of urban biodiversity because the outcome of this study could be applied to conservation implications for other species taxa or regions. Besides urban biodiversity conservation, this study also contributes to the enhancement of public awareness on the importance of biodiversity. Indeed, we established a biodiversity evaluation method in urban greenspace, which could be easily used by citizens and children, and demonstrated this method in several public awareness seminars.
