Summary

Concentrations, polymeric compositions and size distributions of microplastics (MPs),ranged from 20 μm to 5 mm were investigated in surface water of Tama River. The concentrations ranged from 6010 to 14300 particles/m3 and they were also detected even at an upstream site in front of Okutama station. At the upstream sites, the most dominant polymer was acrylic resins, followed by alkyd resins and polyethylene. They contributed 80.8 to 89.1% to total concentration. Median sizes of MPs were <43 μm but the sizes at the downstream were a little larger than those at upstream. Concentrations of MPs in a rainy day were 7 times larger than those in a fine day and the sizes were little smaller.

Concentrations of MPs from sewage treatment plants were also estimated by SHANEL model.
