Summary

In Tama River, wastewater effluent can give a significant impact on the fates of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs).

This study evaluated the changes in abundances of ARGs before and after the discharge of wastewater effluent.

Although microbial community structure did not change before and after discharge of wastewater effluent, abundances of sul1 and tetA genes which confer resistance to sulfonamides and tetracyclines, respectively, increased after discharge of wastewater effluent.

Class 1 integron-integrase gene (intI1) demonstrated the similar change.

Relative abundances of ARGs to 16S rRNA genes also increased after discharge of wastewater effluent.

These results show that ARGs released to river water via wastewater effluent should be controlled in wastewater treatment.
