Microplastic pollution in the Tama River and its influence to fish
|Affiliation||Tokyo University of Science|
Microplastic (MP), which is a piece of plastic (< 5 mm), has been a hot environmental problem in recent years, and there are many unclear points for MP pollution and its impacts to eco system in rivers. The purpose of this study is to understand the pollution status of MP and the effect on fish in the Tama River basin. For this, we investigated the MP pollution of Plecoglossus altivelis, river water and sediment. The results indicated that the MP was found in 85% of the collected fishes, which was very high compared to the previous studies. The shape of the MP found was significantly different. These facts showed that the MP pollution of the fish is affected by the sewage treatment wastewater, and that the fiber may have a longer retention time in the fish than the fragment.
