Research Grant Application Guideline

Application for grants for basic research, application research, and research for environmental improvement plans related to the environmental cleanup of the Tama River and its basin


The Tokyu Foundation for Better Environment (Chairman Mr. Sadayasu Nishimoto) has been inviting the public every year since 1975 to conduct surveys and experimental researches that will help advance the environmental cleanup of the Tama River and its basin and conserve the natural environment. We are happy to announce that we have facilitated 1,131 surveys and experimental researches (711 academic studies and 420 general studies). Continuing the tradition, we will await for highly motivated surveys and experimental researches to apply for the grants to be awarded beginning in April 2013.
1. Eligibility for Application
Anyone who is motivated to conduct surveys and experimental researches pertaining to the following themes is welcomed to apply.
2. Research Themes
(1) Impact of industrial activities and people’s daily life on the Tama River and its basin
(2) Preventing sewage and waste from polluting the Tama River
(3) Use of water at the Tama River and its basin
(4) Activities that will contribute substantially to the environmental conservation or cultural creation of the Tama River and its basin, including activities to enhance environmental awareness such as symposia, concerts, and publications, and campaigns to preserve and restore historical legacy or social systems
3. How to Apply
Please fill in all items of the application form provided by the Foundation, affix your seal to the form, and submit it to the Foundation.
You can either download the “Application Information” and “Application Form” from our website http://www.tokyuenv.or.jp/ or request them from the Foundation by mail. Please enclose a 200 yen-stamp.

4. Grant Decision
The applications will be reviewed at the Foundation’s Selection Committee Meeting scheduled to be held in March 2013. The final decision will be made after consultation with the Board of Directors.
5. Types of Research Grants and Conditions
Type of research Academic research General research
Classification of research Highly specialized survey or experimental research for improving environmental issues, which requires knowledge and experience specific to the field. Survey or experimental research for improving environmental issues, which can be undertaken by the general public without the need for specialized knowledge or experience.

(1)Basically not covered, except when the Selection Committee deems that the item is necessary for the survey, experimental research or activity and is not possessed by the entity or individual.
(2)Various materials, components, or chemicals for the survey or experimental research.
(3)Transportation and lodging related to the survey or experimental research.
(4)Wages for employees hired temporarily for the survey or experimental research.
(5)Leasing fees for equipment or facilities, communication expenses, and other expenses.
With regard to academic research: (1) Not the whole research plan is dependent on the grant, and (2) Travel expenses and compensation can each account for a maximum of 30% of the grant amount requested. When the maximum amount is exceeded considerably, please provide a detailed explanation and attach it to the application form to be submitted.

With regard to general research, in addition to the conventional survey or experimental research, the following activities will also be eligible: activities that will contribute substantially to the environmental conservation or cultural creation of the Tama River and its basin, including activities to enhance environmental awareness such as symposia, concerts, and publications, and campaigns to preserve and restore historical legacy or social systems. Please be sure to apply.
Application Considerations
(1)Please make sure to read the following information designated by the Foundation: “Selection standards for awarding grants to surveys and experimental researches; Method of grant; Methods for conducting surveys and experimental researches, Method of grant payment; and Rules for the protection of personal information of individuals engaged in surveys and experimental researches.”
(2)Since we do not accept the reapplication of any study or research that has been turned down in the previous years, when submitting the same topic of survey or experimental research, please make sure to prepare the application in such a way that it will be easily understood that the contents are different from the previous survey and experimental research.
