Summary

We studied the land-use legacy effects on plant species and phylogenetic diversity in semi-natural grassland in Kosuge village at the upstream of Tamagawa river.
Traditional semi-natural grassland drastically declined from 1940’s to present.
By contrast, the area of the semi-natural grassland which has been cultivated, abandoned, and managed for various agricultural purposes has increased.
Plant, rare-species, and phylogenetic diversity were substantially higher in the traditional than in the “previously-cultivated” grassland. Seed bank of rare species was absent in the “previously-cultivated” grassland, indicating that the dispersal limitation of rare species may contribute to low diversity in the grassland.
