Summary

Fruit body occurrence of tree decay fungi on cherry trees were investigated in several street trees and parks, including Koganei-zakura, which had been investigated every year from 2003. There were some trees with a fruit body appeared first time, and some with fruit body disappeared. The ratio of trees with fruit bodies did not change although some infected trees were cut down. From the result, at least 3 years survey is needed to estimate the damage of tree decay. In these street trees and parks, DNA microsatellite marker (SSR) of Perenniporia fraxinea was examined to clarify the genetic structure of this fungus. No genetic differentiation was found between sites, and this fungus was found to be mating randomly within a site. From this result, neighboring trees are infected by different isolate derived from different basidiospores, not by hyphal extension or root grafting.


From this study, major decay fungi on cherry trees and their occurrence pattern were clarified. For diagnosing decayed trees, more than 3 years survey is found to be necessary. These are the basic knowledge for estimating the damage of decay diseases on cherry trees. For Perenniporia fraxinea, the most important species of root and stem decay in cherry, the results of DNA marker study showed that neighboring trees are not infected by hyphal extension in soil or through root grafting, but by different basidiospore-derived isolates. This finding suggested clearing their fruit bodies and checking the seedling at planting should be effective to control this decay fungus.
