Summary

In this study, we determined the pollution of rare earth elements in the water from Tama-river based on multi-element determination by ICP-MS after solid phase extraction using chelating-resin.

As a result, the potential anthropogenic pollutions of Gd and La were observed for the river water.

Especially since the Gd concentration rapidly increases downstream of the sewage junction, it is suggested that the Gd in the river was derived from anthropogenic such as medicinal drug.

Next, the toxic effects of Gd-containing medicinal drug and river water collected from Tama-river were examined.

The disruption of gene expression in Xenopus-derived A8 cells and developmental defects of fertilized eggs were observed by high concentrations of Gd-containing medicinal drugs.

However, the activation of transcription factors causing gene expression change were not observed.

Furthermore, although the effect of contained Gd in the water was unclear, the activation of transcription factors (AP-1 and NF-κB) and abnormal development of fertilized eggs were observed.
