About The Tokyu Foundation for Better Environment

The Tokyu Foundation for Better Environment was established in August 1974 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Tokyu Corporation. Tokyu Corporation was inaugurated in 1922 after it spun off from a company specializing in housing development in southwest Tokyo along the banks of Tama River and in the Denen-Chofu, Senzoku, and other areas. Since the major business base of Tokyu Corporation has been concentrated in the Tama River basin, the then Chairman Mr. Noboru Goto decided to establisha Foundation with the objective to “improve the environment of the basin” as a token of his appreciation for the local community.

Objectives

1) To provide grants for surveys and experimental researches related to conservation and improvement of the environment of the Tama River and its basin

2)To provide support and grants for activities related to conservation and improvement of the environment of the Tama River and its basin

3) To enhance awareness about environmental activities taking place around the Tama River and its basin

Major Programs

1) Grants for Surveys and Experimental Research

The Foundation invites the public to submit grant applications for conducting “basic research, application research, and research for environmental improvement plansrelated to the environmental cleanup of the Tama River and its basin.” Research grants have been awarded every year since 1975. As of 2012, a total of 1,131 research studies (711 academic studies and 420 gereral studies) have received grants in the amount of 1,338 million yen.

 

Research Themes:

(1) Impact of industrial activities and people’s daily life on the Tama River and its basin

(2) Preventing sewage and waste from polluting the Tama River

(3) Use of water at the Tama River and its basin

(4) Conservation and restoration of the natural environment of the Tama River

 

Applicants of Research Grants:

Scholars as well as anyone who is motivated in researching the abovementioned themes are welcomed to apply.

2) Support and Grants for Activities

(1) Provide direct and indirect supportorgrants to meaningful activities for the conservation and improvement of the environment, including citizen seminars for restoring the environment of the Tama River basin, assistance for support groups, events, etc.

(2) Provide support to a 10-year long-term study conducted since October 2004 to monitor the material cycle system and forest ecosystem (LTER survey) undertaken in collaboration with Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology at the Tama Hill Field Museum (the University’s forest).

(3) Present “The Tokyu Foundation for Better Environment Social Contribution in Academia Award” to promote academic learning in Japan.

3) Awareness Enhancement

(1) Publish and distribute free of charge a quarterly Foundation Newsletter Tamagawa to provide environmental information to research grant recipients, residents in the Tama River basin, environmental protection organizations, schools, and government officials.

(2) Publish and distribute free of charge every year a supplementary environmental learning reading material, known as Tamagawa Junior Guide: Let’s Go to Tama River for mainly primary schools in the Tama River basin.
