Summary
We have carried out the following over one year: (1) Harvest festivals at community gardens and workshops for children; (2) Design of direct-to-consumer produce stand; and (3) Pizza making events. Urban farmland, which continues to suffer a decline in recent years, fills an important role in preserving the natural environment through water retention and lowering local temperatures, and also the role of providing the surrounding community with a place for refuge during natural disasters and a variety of recreational opportunities. Our aim is to re-educate those living around about urban farmland and to make children familiar with local nature and agriculture through food education. Through our workshops, designing of produce stands, and pizza making events, we believe that we taught many children living in Setagaya about agriculture in the urban areas. The number of urban farmers is declining every year, and cultivated land is being converted to other uses. Our hope is that through our program, activities to conserve urban farmland from a new direction will spread further in the future.
