Summary

The Shinagawa irrigation network was originally developed to provide water for the garden pond at the Edo villa of the Hosokawa family, rulers of Kumamoto Domain, but within a few years, it was being used to irrigate agricultural land. Water continued to flow through its channels until the early 1950s. With the subsequent conversion of agricultural land into residential land, use of this network of waterways came to an end.
Most of these irrigation facilities were converted to alternative uses, providing land for infrastructure such as roads and sewerage systems.
When we conducted a preliminary survey to investigate their current status, we discovered a number of irrigation facilities, bridges, stone walls, and small open spaces beside the water dotted around here and there, which dated back to the time when the network was in use.
With this fact in mind, we carried out the following tasks and research for the main study:

1) Gathering and deciphering documents concerning changes over the course of its history.
2) Features of the configuration of the channels from the perspective of the geographical conditions.
3) Types, forms, and locations of irrigation facilities.
4) Forms and locations of irrigation systems, etc.

The insights that emerged from this research are summarized in diagrams, photographs, maps, and explanations presented in this report.
