Summary

Monitoring of aquatic organisms and canal environments in sections of the Ichinomiya-canal, which were improved to facilitate the habitation of aquatic organisms, was conducted mainly by the residents of Tama-city, in April, September, and November from 2016 to 2017.

In the improved canal section, wooden revetment was installed on left bank of the section, and 30 cm deep water area was installed under the small bridge as fish wintering habitat. Sand and silt accumulated, submerged plants grew, and riparian plants gradually increased in the improved canal section. Total fish density in the improved section of the canal recovered as compared with the density before canal improvement; however, density of crucian carp (Carassius spp.) was lower than that before the canal improvement.

Large-sized individuals of crucian carp and large number of mud loach (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) were found in the area with 30 cm deep water installed; however, large-sized individuals of crucian carp was not observed with shallowing water depth. Nonetheless, large-sized individuals of crucian carp were found again after increase in water depth of the deep water area by dredging out sand and silt by citizens.
