Summary

The Fukushima nuclear accident of 2011 and the continued problem to manage the damaged reactor has led to concerns over the possibility of exposure to radioactive material in major residential areas. In this study, we investigated the levels of radioactive isotopes along the Tama River, a highly populated area lying within the Tokyo metropolis. Our study indicates that the nuclear fission products Cesium-134 and Cesium-137 isotopes are present with their levels appearing to increase at more upstream sites. Iodine-131 also appears to be present at each measurement site. Here we report the implications of our findings and also consider limitations and how we might address these in future studies. In addition, we describe how we have undertaken a public awareness education program including communicating our research in high school science education for the purpose of promoting this research for consideration in the Excellence Award at the JST sponsored Global Science Campus next generation scientist training program
