Summary

Rivers are expected to be beneficial for the health of humans, but their effectiveness has not been clarified unequivocally by biophysical and biochemical analyses. People who walked along the upper and middle reaches of the Tamagawa river showed reduced levels of salivary amylase activity, which is considered to be a stress marker. We previously reported the suppression of oxidative stress and modulation of immunological functions by forest walking. After the river walking, the volunteers showed decreased amounts of oxidative stress. Although there were no improvements in their immunological abilities. Interestingly, a quarter of volunteers who participated in a lecture showed higher levels of salivary amylase activity, suggesting that many people may be suffering from stress. The audience who took part in the open lecture seemed to obtain full satisfaction based on the results of evaluation forms. In the near future, we will require improvement of the Tamagawa river-associated equipment such as roads and nature parks.

Volunteers who walked along the upper and middle reaches of the Tamagawa river showed decreased levels of salivary amylase activity, whereas those who walked in the lower areas did not. The physiological condition of humans is greatly influenced by many factors, such as exercise, meals and weather conditions, suggesting a requirement for multifarious approach methods. The present results suggest that staying and walking in the river atmosphere may be appropriate for rehabilitation programs and as an exercise therapy in our aging society. Furthermore, this report will enhance “ecoactivity”, such as improvement of river-associated equipment, through neighborhood actions.
