Summary

We aimed to evaluate the sources and properties of particulate organic matter (POM) in Tama River released under wet weather conditions. The suspended POM which was collected at Haijima-bridge and Hino-bridge by an auto-sampler at two stations in Tama River was analyzed by using pyrolysis-GC/MS. The results of pyrolysis-GC/MS indicated that POM of similar compositions was discharged in different wet weather events at Hino-bridge regardless of water level variation patterns. Pyrolysis-products derived from lignin and lipids were abundant at the upstream sampling station, while those derived from proteins and polysaccharides were abundant at the downstream sampling station. The difference of pyrolysis-products of both sampling stations was probably due to the inflow of treated wastewater between two stations or land use patterns of these backlands. We also analyzed attached (10μm<) and free-living (0.2-10μm) microorganisms by using terminal-restriction fragment length polymorphism. We could find characteristic fragments in both fractions, suggesting that biological information may be useful to identify sources of POM.
