Summary

In this study, Tamagawa river sediments and water were analyzed for multi-elements and isotopes.

The concentrations of base metal elements (Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb) increase from upstream towards downstream. Geoaccumation index and enrichment factor values of river sediments increase in downstream sediments, indicating they are polluted by base metal elements.

Five step extraction method (Hall et al., 1996) indicates residual fraction is high for Cr and Ni and their correlation is high and adsorption fraction is high for Cu and Pb, suggesting their mobility is high.

Sr isotopic compositions of river water, river sediments and rocks from granitic area and sedimentary rock are distinctly different, indicating Sr isotopic compositions of river water are controlled by country rock type.

Pb isotopic compositions of midstream and downstream sediments are distinctly different. Pb isotopic compositions of adsorption fraction and the other fractions are different. These data indicate that downstream sediments are anthropogenicaly polluted. Oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions of river water decrease with elevation. This trend is explained by elevation effect.

As mentioned in ③, this study showed that downstream river sediments contain high amounts of base metal elements, Cr and Ni are mostly of natural origin rather than anthropogenic origin, and Cu and Pb are highly mobile from extraction experiments. Therefore it is required that Cu and Pb are removed from the downstream sediments.
