Summary

We investigated diversity and distribution of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in epilithic biofilms in Tama River.

We applied environmental DNAs analyses and isolated nitrogen-fixing bacteria to examine their effects on the growth of eukaryotic algae in the epilithic biofilms.

Environmental DNAs analyses indicated that bacterial compositions in the biofilms were not markedly altered by a change in season and region and one of the major members was a group of anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria. Nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria were frequently detected at downstream regions. At upstream regions, aerobic heterotrophic bacteria and anaerobic bacteria were also detected as a nitrogen fixer. Some nitrogen-fixing bacteria which were isolated in this study showed growth promoting abilities to eukaryotic algae. Our study indicates that various types of nitrogen fixing bacteria are distributed and possibly support the primary production of river biofilms.
